The Gardner Arts Centre was designed by
Basil Spence and opened in 1969. The building, with its distinctive plan of
radiating concentric circles, sits at the south east corner of the University
of Sussex campus.
The
existing facilities closed in 2007. RHP have been working closely with the
University and Ann Minors Performance Consultants (AMPC), together with
Northcroft, Gardiner & Theobold, Sound Space Design, Hoare Lea, ZBP and
Arup to develop a strategy for a 21st Century arts space within the existing
Grade II* listed building shell. The building will include a series of
multi-purpose studio spaces, gallery, flexible auditorium space for up to 350
people, café bar and associates storage and backstage areas.
Reinventing the Auditorium |
The
proposed £7.2m refurbishment and remodelling scheme will create the
Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts - a new building for a new age.
