Our entry, designed by associate Andrew Drummond, was inspired by the aviation heritage and technological innovation of Marshalls in Cambridge.

The structure of the house, inspired by the lightweight airframe of the Wellington Bomber, could to be prefabricated by Marshalls apprentices and transported to site as a lightweight aluminium lattice frame or constructed on site as a timber gridshell around its central service core.

The adaptable skin of the building brings together a range of emerging technologies with Pythagoras Glass outer pane with building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), and an inner skin of Smart Glass technology that can automatically adjust levels of transparency and light transmittance to avoid glare and excessive heat gain.  The Smart Glass can also be controlled via an App on your mobile phone or tablet so that users can control levels of privacy. The BIPV and Smart Glass outer panes then sandwich a third layer of either Low E glass or highly insulated translucent Nanogel filled sections to vary levels of transparency and increased levels of insulation.

The Wing development in Cambridge will create a new urban quarter of 1200 homes to the east of the city.

"Wing is a very personal project for Marshall. It will be our back garden for many years to come. How it looks, how it feels to walk through, how people live and work there is extremely important to us. There is a strong commitment to remain involved in Wing to create a real community with a spirit attuned to our values of customer service, integrity and fairness, innovations and creativity and people at the heart of our success."
